Dr John Oyediran Olabisi FRCS was the first to combine teaching of medical students and skeletal clinical duties in the University and the Teaching Hospital . He was based in Ibadan working with the Oyo State Ministry of Health . Among other classes of medical students taught by him we have the 1987 graduating class. He must have had a strong influence on this class as some of them went on to specialise in otorhinolaryngology. Among these include Professor AO Somefun College of Medicine University of Lagos/Lagos University Teaching Hospital Lagos; Professor A D Dunmade University of Ilorin/University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital as well as Dr Segun Segun-Busari a Reader in University of Ilorin/University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Dr Olabisi could not continue in this role as he sought greener pastures in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He is now late.
In 1989, Professor Onyekwere Ogan, who retired from University of Ibadan/University College Hospital Ibadan, took up a full time teaching and clinical appointment at the University of Ilorin/University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Ilorin Nigeria. For the first time the centre had a full time academic and clinical staff, a distinguished clinician with vast experience. Professor Ogan set out to organise a well stocked clinical department capable of housing a residency training programme to train future staff.
In September 1990; Dr FE Ologe and Dr Segun Segun-Busari became the pioneer resident doctors (Postgraduate) of the department; and in September 1991 Dr AD Dunmade resumed as the third resident doctor. Unfortunately Professor Ogan passed on in August 1991 following a ghastly road accident on his way to Enugu.
